After a much needed win Tuesday night, the 37-40 Phillies will try and take the series Wednesday night from the 33-45 Miami Marlins.
Before we talk about Wednesday night's ballgame, we need to talk about a certain Phillie of tomorrow.
Infielder Bryson Stott has been selected to play for the National League team in the 22nd annual Futures Game. Stott will be the Phillies' only representative.
The game will be played on Sunday afternoon, July 11, at Coors Field, site of the July 13 All-Star Game.
Stott, 23, was the Phillies' first-round draft pick in 2019. The club selected him 14th overall out of UNLV.
A lefty hitter, Stott has been one of the standouts in the Phillies' system this season. In 46 games between Jersey Shore and Reading, he's hitting .282 with a .413 on-base percentage and a .509 slugging percentage. He has nine homers and 22 RBIs. He played second base and shortstop early in the season at Jersey Shore but has been used solely at shortstop with Reading.
Now, back to the ball game.
Rhys Hoskins is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game.
Although Hoskins homered Tuesday, he's gone just 1-for-22 with two runs, four walks and nine strikeouts across the last six games.
The 28-year-old will get a rare day off while Brad Miller takes over at first base and bats seventh.
Odubel Herrera is back in the lineup Wednesday after he was benched Tuesday for a baserunning mistake in Cincinnati he made the day prior.
The Phillies — who by the way seeking their first winning streak in more than two weeks — will hand the ball to strikeout-record holder Aaron Nola Wednesday.
Nola (5-4, 3.97 ERA) is coming off a historic outing.
Nola struck out 10 consecutive New York Mets hitters on Friday in New York, joining Tom Seaver as the only pitchers in history to accomplish the feat.
Seaver, pitching for the Mets, fanned 10 straight San Diego Padres on April 22, 1970.
"It's pretty cool being in a category with Tom," Nola said.
He exited after 5 1/3 scoreless innings, but the Phillies wound up losing 2-1 in eight innings in the first game of a doubleheader.
Nola struck out 12 and walked one while yielding two hits.
"My curveball was effective (Friday)," Nola said postgame. "It wasn't popping out of my hand. I was getting swing and misses on that. My changeup wasn't really popping either. I think the key is those pitches were down for the most part all day, and I think that's why I got those swing and misses."
In his career against the Marlins, Nola is 4-7 with a 3.13 ERA in 16 starts.
Nola will try to give a breather to a Phillies bullpen that had blown seven saves in the six previous games before Tuesday. Jose Alvarado earned his third save Tuesday but gave up two runs in 1 1/3 innings.
The Marlins will send Jordan Holloway (1-2, 2.55 ERA) to the mound Wednesday for his third start of the season. Holloway has made one career appearance against the Phillies, his major league debut on July 26, 2020, when he tossed one-third of an inning and allowed two hits and no runs.
That was not the best outing for Holloway, to say the least.
